Shayla Hufana - ConceptShell Owner, Artist and Designer

ConceptShell is a small design studio in Seattle, WA (South Lake Union), founded by Shayla Hufana in 2011. Shayla is a Filipina-American visual artist and graphic designer who was born and raised in Seattle, WA (Beacon Hill area). Shayla has 16+ years of professional experience working as a designer, art/creative director, and production artist in a wide range of industries including aerospace, food/bar, healthcare, sports, luxury retail, makeup and beauty, tech, nonprofits and more. As a queer, Asian woman part of the LGBTQ+ community, creating art to speak up and help protect others is important to her. Shayla strives to inspire and motivate the youth in her community by listening to their concerns and elevating their voices. Outside of ConceptShell, Shayla is a Creative Lead (Senior Art Director/Design Manager/Designer) at Cognizant's global in-house creative team and previously was a Senior Designer/Art Director with Boeing for 6 years. She has served for two years as a Co-Chair for the Seattle Chapter at SEGD (Society of Experiential Graphic Design), and was 1 of 8 members on the Advisory board of the first-ever Racial Justice Commission.

ConceptShell enjoys working with small, local businesses and artists, especially with those in the south Seattle area. Shayla is passionate about helping clients solve complex problems. Her works can be seen west to east coast — from WA, CA, HI to NY, and around the globe, including Africa, Canada, China, India, and Mexico.

Artist, Urban ArtWorks, Feb 2022 - Present
Design and paint murals for public art to honor young voices and people in the Seattle community. Projects include: “We Are Human” for WNBA Seattle Storm utility box, 2022 and Everett Station District Alliance billboard, 2023. URBAN ARTWORKS’ MISSION IS TO ENGAGE YOUTH, ARTISTS, AND COMMUNITIES IN THE CREATION OF PUBLIC ART THAT INSPIRES CONNECTIONS AND HONORS THEIR VOICES.

Wears many hats as a creative and art director, manager, visual and graphic designer. Support Cognizant's global in-house creative team which concepts, builds and delivers content and creative, including integrated support across multiple brand, experiential, and web properties, for the company’s global internal and external campaigns. Created modern, strategic, world-class, award-winning designs for print, digital, video, social media campaigns, air shows, event spaces, and customer experiences for global Boeing audiences. Practiced and promoted accessibility, diversity, and inclusion into all projects. Consulted Communications team of 30+ on Boeing’s 737 MAX Return to Service initiative for three years during time of uncertainty and significant change. Led design and supported creative direction of Boeing’s Travel Confidently Initiative (COVID-19 efforts, website no longer active). Boeing Black Employee Association (BBEA) Executive Board member from 6/2020-1/2022.

Created marketing materials for 20+ programs to help break the cycle of homelessness and poverty in the Seattle community. Art and creative directed successful Catalyst Gala alongside Video Production Specialist, raised record high in donations of $1.6 million. Projects include: Search & Rescue volunteer room remodel, annual report, and North Seattle Dental Clinic.

Created innovative designs and managed projects for brands, environments, wayfinding systems, advertising campaigns, customized RFPs, and marketing materials for a diverse range of clients including Nordstrom, Peets Coffee, SSP America, Centerplate, Google, and Whole Foods.

Senior Graphic Designer, Signs By Tomorrow, Aug 2009 - Jan 2011
Designed marketing and advertising signage, decals, vehicle graphics, branding and advertising. Directed graphic designers and production team from ideation to fabrication and installation. Experimented with unique methods and tools to create prototypes. Proofed and prepped final artwork. Worked printers and Final Cut Pro cutter. Installed graphics on storefronts and full vehicle wraps.

Fun facts

Shayla is a sneakerhead and has worked at Finish Line as a sales associate. She occasionally plays co-ed basketball with Puget Sound Basketball league.

A few of her favorite projects to date is the AAPI utility box art for Urban Artworks and the Seattle Storm basketball team, and creating the logo design for Laro Tayo, a childcare center coming soon in Kent , WA.

Her first jobs were at Yuen Lui Photography Studio and Target.
